Women and Mentoring (WAM) are seeking volunteer mentors for our Young Women's Program.

The WAM Young Women’s Program assists young women, both cisgender and transgender, and non-binary people aged 12-24, who are identified as at risk or who are in the early stages of contact with the criminal justice system. The program acts as both a preventative and early intervention approach for
vulnerable young women living in the Frankston, Mornington Peninsula and Kingston communities. Participants are matched with an individual supportive volunteer mentor.
WAM mentors are trained and resourced to provide appropriate support to the program participants, to share their skills and help participants reach their goals.

Mentors would have the following availability and characteristics:

• Identify as female, gender diverse or non-binary.
• Ideally be aged 21 years and above.
• Be available for face-to-face Mentor training over two days.
• Live in or close proximity to the Frankston, Mornington Peninsula, Kingston, Casey or Bayside LGAs.
• Have availability and flexibility to meet their mentee during the week (during the day or after-school, depending on the participants schedule).
• Be able to commit to mentoring for a minimum 12-month period.
• Be open minded and utilise active listening skills.
• Mentors believe in a community that is safe and welcoming for all women.
• Be able to apply a strength-based approach to mentoring.
• Be available for monthly peer supervision meetings

Engine cleaning is your first step to becoming a driver!

Our Engine Cleaners assist with the daily maintenance of our majestic locomotives while helping the depot to run smoothly and efficiently. Engine cleaners generally work side by side with the rostered fireman to help prepare steam locomotives for the days services.

• No prior qualifications required. Training provided.
• Based at our historic Belgrave workshops
• Suits team players with patience and great communication skills
• Early starts - approx. 6.30 am

Our Buildings team assist in maintenance of Puffing Billy Railways buildings, infrastructure and surrounds.

• You will have the opportunity to engage with our visitors in conversations about Puffing Billy Railway and provide assistance to visitors to enhance their visit

Do you love being in the great outdoors? This could be the role for you to help with the beautification of our gardens and parks in the station precincts as a Gardening Team Member.

Our station precincts require manicuring and some tender loving care to ensure that the parks and gardens look pristine for our local and international visitors to enjoy.

Do you have a sense of fun and storytelling?

Our Education Guides are friendly and enthusiastic volunteers who support our education officers with guided school groups. Student needs are at the heart of everything they do!

You will need to interact with students, assist in workshops and enhance the teacher and student experience while making the experience fun, enjoyable and safe for students.

No prior teaching experience is needed, so if this is a field that interests you, why not start here! Training provided.

Workshop team members assist in the maintenance, repair and restoration of our heritage locomotive fleet.No prior qualifications required. Training provided.

Duties will depend on the area of activity and any specific relevant skills, but may include:

• Preparation and painting work
• Support our dedicated team of mechanical fitters
• Support for our project teams
• Housekeeping and tool maintenance

Workshop shifts run on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

Our Booking Clerks welcome passengers to the railway and assit with ticketing and booking enquiries. 

• Suits friendly volunteers who enjoy talking to the public and being a sunny and welcoming face to our excited patrons!
• Provide excellent customer service, process online tickets, boarding and carriage allocations of all excursion trains and provide relevant and accurate information to all visitors.
• You will need some computer experience to navigate our systems and we will provide training and support so you can confidently help our customers

Passenger Guides welcome everyone to the railway and provide essential information to ensure visitors have a wonderful experience

For more than 30 years, Elder Rights Advocacy has helped older people, their families and representatives in Victoria with issues related to aged care services.  In 2023 the program expanded to include the Aged Care Volunteer Visitor Scheme (ACVVS) which is free and government funded. The aim is to improve the quality of life of older people through friendship and companionship.

Detailed description:

Volunteering with Elder Rights Advocacy helps improve the health and wellbeing of older Victorian’s. It’s also a great opportunity for you to gain personal satisfaction, contribute your talents and experience and gain new skills.

You will be introduced to an older person in their home or aged care facility who is experiencing feelings of social isolation. Through your ongoing visits, you will build a meaningful friendship by providing companionship that will assist in reducing feelings of loneliness and encourage social connection.

Role Responsibilities

• Visit one-on-one with an older person on a weekly or fortnightly basis.
• Undertake activities that are of interest to the participant. This this may include listening to music together, playing cards or board games, or simply having a chat.
• Outings are also possible once ongoing visits are well established.
• Maintain regular communication with the program staff.
• Record and submit monthly reports.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• A genuine interest in building friendships and social connections with older people to ease social isolation.
• Have an understanding of health issues faced by people as they age and use this understanding and empathy during your visits.
• Effective social skills; can listen and engage with people possibly from a diverse cultural background and who may be experiencing loneliness.
• Ability to maintain clear boundaries and confidentiality.
• Are mature, reliable, flexible and have confidence to work independently without direct supervision and to seek support and guidance as required.

Our Soup Vans offer food, social connection and referral pathways out of homelessness and poverty, to people experiencing or at risk of, homelessness and disadvantage.  

Our soup van services are located in metropolitan and regional Victoria and undertake street service of meals to our friends on the street and people experiencing food insecurity in boarding and rooming houses, crisis accommodations, social housing and other residential locations.
 
The Vinnies Soup Vans are run by dedicated volunteers, known as Vannies, who annually provide over 700,000 meals to people in need. Our soup vans operate 365 days a year, rain, hail or shine!

Backpacks 4 VIC Kids is looking for a lead elf of the Christmas 4 Kids in Care program in a new voluntary position, the Christmas 4 Kids in Care Program Support Officer. So, if you are great with customer liaison, super organised, and a whiz on the computer, please get in touch.

This position will be mostly based at our Headquarters in Cranbourne West and our storage location in Dandenong South.

This year we aim to deliver 6,000 amazing Santa Packs to vulnerable, displaced children across Victoria.  Whilst our warehouse volunteers are busy creating these wonderful packs, we need someone behind the scenes to provide administrative and marketing support, liaise with our customers to ensure that their needs are met, oversee the recruitment and induction of volunteer elves and manage the program social media. 

Our ideal candidate has a positive attitude, an eye for detail, works well under pressure, can work independently and is proficient in Office 365.  If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.

A grounded and mature volunteer would be suitable. Volunteers need to be proficient in English. We are seeking people who are compassionate, patient and willing to genuinely help students. No previous experience is necessary, however, volunteers must be able to commit to a minimum 1 hour per week for 12 months. 

Many of our current volunteers find this program personally rewarding as they help students thrive. The impact volunteers can make on a young person's life goes well beyond their school years. This is an opportunity to not only help, shape and support young people and schools, it may even enrich a volunteers life as well.

What our mentors have in common is a genuine desire to help students, be patient, non-judgmental and a good listener.
