Do you have a sense of fun and storytelling?

Our Education Guides are friendly and enthusiastic volunteers who support our education officers with guided school groups. Student needs are at the heart of everything they do!

You will need to interact with students, assist in workshops and enhance the teacher and student experience while making the experience fun, enjoyable and safe for students.

No prior teaching experience is needed, so if this is a field that interests you, why not start here! Training provided.

Puffing Billy Railway is one of Australia's oldest best-preserved heritage steam railways in the world that offers a range of unique volunteer opportunties. 

Do you love being in the great outdoors? This could be the role for you to help with the beautification of our gardens and parks in the station precincts as a Gardening Team Member.

Our station precincts require manicuring and some tender loving care to ensure that the parks and gardens look pristine for our local and international visitors to enjoy. 

No prior qualifications required, training provided.

We are seeking volunteers to visit older people in your local area who would benefit from regular contact, conversation and social outings! This might involve visiting someone at home for an hour or two once a week or sharing an outing to the cinema or a café. This flexible role is a great way to make a difference in someone’s life whilst also making a great contribution to your community.

This dynamic role will allow you to improve the social connections within your local community whilst getting to know new and interesting people with lots of life experience to share!

The role will involve providing short term social engagement to customers living in an area whilst they wait for a longer term volunteer connection. Each visit may entail checking in on 3-5 customers for a quick chat and catch up.

The successful applicant will have the availability and openness to visit and connect with multiple customers across the course of the week/fortnight. Time management will be essential to ensure that regular contact with customers is provided.
Access to a car is highly desirable. Opportunities for fuel reimbursement available.

Brenda has always enjoyed the atmosphere and experience of visiting a café. Brenda worked as a barista for many years and has a great appreciation for all things caffeine! Following the pandemic,Brenda, like many, has struggled to leave her home and be in public places and crowds. Brendan would love to be connected with a coffee loving volunteer to accompany him on outings to local cafes to improve his confidence to get out and about again.

Interested in learning how to drive or fire a steam locomotive and be part of living history? Day one of your journey and training starts at Puffing Billy Railway in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges as a member of the Steam Locomotive Support Crew.

Puffing Billy Railway is a perfectly preserved steam train railway that’s been operating since 1900, capturing the spirit of the steam age in all its charming glory. We have stood the test of time being preserved, restored, and maintained by passionate people?and championed by the local community.?Volunteers put the life into our living museum, supporting our efforts to preserve and operate our heritage railway.

Ever wanted to drive a steam train? Well, this might be the beginning of that journey!

What's Involved?

You will enjoy early morning starts in the running shed in Belgrave where you will work together with a steam locomotive driver and fireman to prepare the engines of the day.

Polishing, lubricating, splitting firewood and preparing our heritage steam engines for their day’s work so they look their best for our guests will be your number one priority. You will be familiarising yourself with our locomotives with the fireman, slowly and surely understanding the mechanics and principles behind running century-old steam locomotives on a daily basis. As you progress and become more familiar with the engines, the daily preparation and maintenance activities will become second nature for you.

From here you can express interest in our safe working course (the track rules for operating on our railway safely), which is the gateway to moving into a Guard / Signalman, Fireman or Driver role, with all training provided in-house by specialised teams. The time it takes to move through these roles depends on a number of factors including your time available to volunteer and your ability to retain critical information.

We're looking for team players with patience and great communication skills who don't mind a dawn start. Prior qualifications are not?required,?and role-specific training is provided. If you can spare at least one day a fortnight, this might be the start of a lifelong learning journey.

Do you have 1-2 hours a week spare during school hours to help young people in a special school who need extra support? This is a 6-12 month commitment. 

We need volunteers to support students at school, during school hours.  We are looking for volunteers who can be a role model for a young person. This volunteer role requires someone who has a caring and empathetic nature and a willingness to guide, help and support young people in need. Volunteers must be able to commit a minimum 1 hour per week.

We are particularly interested in volunteers that can provide support in cooking, gardening, STEM, woodworking and art.

Many of our current volunteers find this program personally rewarding as they help students thrive. The impact volunteers can make on a young person's life goes well beyond their school years. This is an opportunity to not only help, shape and support young people and schools, it may even enrich a volunteers life as well.
